2.0 out of 5 stars Excited...at first, February 2, 2010

This review is from: BRAND NEW Cuisinart Grind&Brew Thermal 12-Cup Coffee Maker
At first we were thrilled about the combination of fresh tasting coffee and brewing convenience. We gladly accepted the responsibility to clean it at least once a week (sometimes every three or four days for wetter beans). Over time, our visions freshly brewed coffee house coffee changed. Here's what we've discovered.

1) The grind feature is very loud. That is not convenient when you want to grind and brew a pot and still let everyone else sleep. Other grinders that I've used are loud, but this one screams. Don't stand too close without ear plugs.

2) To clean the coffee maker, the manufacturer provides a small table spoon/cleaning brush. At first, it seems like a cool little accessory, but the brush end is not practical for cleaning out the chamber that the ground bean travel through on their way to the filter. We end up using the handle of a plastic spoon to clear the passage.

3) The thermal properties of the pot are nice, but pours about as... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Evolution of Coffee making, May 18, 2010
This review is from: BRAND NEW Cuisinart Grind&Brew Thermal 12-Cup Coffee Maker
Owning the last generation of this Coffee maker, I was impressed with my daughter's new 10 cup Burr-grind machine. At Amazon, I found the 12 cup, with a Thermal container. Bought it several weeks ago and could not be more pleased. I have rarely written a product review, but three things motivated me this time. One, the couple of bad reviews I read, two, my extremly positive experience with the Cuisinart company, and how much they have improved what has been a good product over the last several years. One, the automation of the bean feeder saves time and guesswork. The grinder is superior and needs far less cleaning. The thermal container keeps coffee hot for 6 hours and you can take it with you in the morning, as I do at times, to another house. Two, when you call Cuisinart, you quickly get a human...one who knows the products. I sought a replacement several years ago, no questions, almost two years old, got it sent all free within a week. The coffee tastes great and you use a little... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Concept, Terrible Design, Absolutely 0 Customer Service, April 24, 2010

This review is from: BRAND NEW Cuisinart Grind&Brew Thermal 12-Cup Coffee Maker
We have had a cuisinart grind and brew coffee pot for about 12 years (3 or 4 other models) with great satisfaction. This model makes terrific coffee, when it actually makes coffee. This is roughly 25% of the time. I clean it as shown in the instructional DVD every 3rd or 4th use, and continue to end up with a pot of water instead of coffee every 3-5 days. We had ours replaced and had the exact same problems with the replacement (which took 2 months to arrive???)

The pot is a hot mess. We had one other cuisinart with a thermal pot and it worked well. This one has coffee dripping all over when it is brewing and we all pour about as well as a two year old with a full gallon of milk. I spend more time cleaning either the machine or the mess it makes then enjoying the coffee. We are very disappointed with the coffee maker and the lack of customer service from cuisinart. As always Amazon handled the problem by going above and beyond to resolve our issue and take the return in... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent so far., May 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Saeco Talea Giro Plus Automatic Espresso Machine, Silver and Titanium (Kitchen)
Definitely worth 5 stars overall in my estimation - having done lots of research and knowing its limitations before the purchase. Quality of the espresso produced surpasses almost all coffee shops including Charbucks and others by far. An expert barrista may be able to produce slightly better quality, but even their results are not consistent.

I previously returned a Jura-Capresso 13423 Impressa S9 One Touch Automatic Coffee-and-Espresso Center, Platinum because it produced inferior espresso and frothed milk with gigantic lukewarm bubbles. I would not have returned it (even at that price) if it had performed as well as the Talea. (THANK YOU AMAZON for a great return policy.) In fairness to the Jura, maybe it was faulty - at the finest setting the grounds looked very coarse - coarser than I would use for French-Press... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive but Wonderful!, November 3, 2010

This review is from: Saeco Talea Giro Plus Automatic Espresso Machine, Silver and Titanium (Kitchen)
I have had my saeco talea Giro for about two years now. It had to be serviced once during this time. The machine is a bit touchy and you really have to get to know how it works before you can judge it. First of all you have to keep it cleaned and de-scaled to keep it in good working order. If you have no time for this then do not buy it. Lights will come on before you start to brew to let you know you have to clean out the coffee grounds or empty the water well. This can be annoying if you are ready to have an espresso and you have to stop and clean things out. It will not work unless this is done first. So what I do after I brew is take the time and clean and empty grounds so the next time it is ready to go. With that said, I absolutely love making my latte it is of the highest quality that you would find at Starbucks or any other great coffee house. I even take it with me on vacation, if I can. I think for the money though, it should be made of stainless steel and not... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A princess but worth it., April 29, 2011
This review is from: Saeco Talea Giro Plus Automatic Espresso Machine, Silver and Titanium (Kitchen)
I've had this machine almost a year and have used it at least once a day with no problems. It's my first expresso machine so it's really my testing machine. It makes great expresso and it's very quick and easy but as previous reviewer said, it's a bit touchy and I found the initial learning curve annoying.
Pros: I can make multiple cups easily.
It has the ability to select shot size, strength of expresso and the amount of water dispensed with the shot.
It has a pre-ground coffee bypass feature which I love for late night decaf and trying different brands for different family members tastes.
Because it warms quickly I can have a latte before work in the morning.
As semi automatic its convenient, consistent and makes great lattes.
No more costly Starbucks!
Cons :You have to stay on top of the maintenance and prep.
Lights will come on if the grounds aren't emptied and water tank filled.
It takes up a good bit of counter space.
It's... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great machine, here's my notes..., August 20, 2010
This review is from: Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I've had this machine now 4 months. I've had many machines before it, including the ever popular DeLonghi. This is an amazing machine, but there are a few things to know.

1. All espresso machines, and even some coffee machines, need to be primed. If there is water in the tank, yet it's not pumping but making noise, chances are you just need to prime it. Turn the steam knob just like in the manual, and if it fails, try again. You only have to do this when you first get the machine, or if you some how let it run dry.

2. The specs list this as not coming with a tamper, that's only partially correct. It comes with a plastic scoop / tamper combo thang. Before you get too annoyed with it, I recommend ordering "RSVP Terry's Tamper" (probably advertised on the same page). It's less than 7 bucks, and the small side fits this machines portafilter perfectly.

3. Some reviewers have knocked this machine because the "Filter keeps getting clogged". Here's a news... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great so far!!, July 25, 2007
This review is from: Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I read that another reviewer had trouble with her machine. Hopefully it was the exception and not the rule. It comes with a 3-year warranty, so I figure that I have reasonable protection should anything break.

This is my first espresso machine and I did a lot of shopping and read a ton of reviews before deciding to buy. I was nervous about buying it because there were zero reviews at the time. However, I loved the look, liked the feature set, and believed in the Cuisinart brand. I have had the machine for a week and have used it at least once each day. So far I am extremely pleased.

I had considered the DeLonghi EC155, which gets good ratings and is reasonably priced. However, it requires the operator to guess or measure the volume of espresso. I am terrible at guessing the volumes of liquids, so I liked that this machine has buttons that make a pre-set (or programmable) volume of coffee. It turns out that this is a great feature and really frees me to... Read more

This review is from: Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This unit is nicely put together, with its stainless steel finish. It definitely has a quality feel to it. I had no problem with turning the steam knob, as others have mentioned.

The machine makes excellent espresso, both in semi-automatic and manual modes. Good crema, excellent taste.

Where this machine fall short, though, is in steam volume. It takes a long time to froth the milk, and getting it right is very hit or miss. At first I thought there was more to the art of frothing than I'd assumed, and I kept working on my technique. The best approach, I found, was to include a couple of ice cubes in the milk, to keep the temperature down as the froth built up. Results were barely satisfactory.

I have since discovered that a stronger steam flow is the key to frothing effectively. I'm now using a fully automatic DeLonghi machine that makes excellent espresso and has a far more powerful flow of steam than this Cuisinart (at least the one I had)... Read more
