Product Description
What if all of your internet activity were cataloged and the information stored and accumulated over the course of many months, years, or even your entire lifetime? Would you feel comfortable knowing your entire browsing history was being saved, searched, and analyzed? Would you mind if all of your internet activity was collected, bought and sold for marketing purposes? What would happen if a rogue actor obtained the information for some other purpose? A much darker purpose? The proliferation and advancement of tracking technology, data analysis, and social media, combined with the lack of legal and technological privacy protection is cause for great concern. A major stumbling block to privacy protection is the complex nature of the web of technology that forms the internet. This complexity encourages apathy. In The Dataminer, Robert Kull explores the dangerous possibilities that result from the total collapse of privacy in the digital age. The Dataminer tells the thrilling (and sometimes humorous) story of Falcon Martin, a brilliant young computer programmer and entrepreneur who discovers a dangerous secret inherent in the structure of the web. The discovery lands him in a battle between good and evil that has spanned many lifetimes. The Dataminer integrates easy to understand explanations of real world internet and privacy technology with a frightening story of the lust for power.

The Dataminer Reviews
Becomes fantasy, By Bob (UK) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Dataminer (Kindle Edition) This book was heading for a five star review until about 60% of the way through when it changed to fantasy. Initially the story was a mix between fact and fiction with a software designer producing some data mining (allows information to be collected sorted etc to give info that is not easily available) software. This together with some murders that seemed disconnected from the main story made riveting reading and I was expecting some sort of conspiracy or similar however it changes to a "fantasy" story which deals with the paranormal interfacing with the internet and becomes to me lots of jargon which I was not familiar with and did not seem to be a logical progression from the main story. I like science fiction / fantasy stories but for me the mix did not work. Timely Topic - Riveting Read, By Brevort Customer "Brevort Customer" (United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: The Dataminer (Paperback) Anyone involved with the internet, especially those concerned with the use of personal data inherent in the system, will enjoy this thought-provoking cliffhanger. The author sparks our imaginations with the question - "What if a rogue individual with evil intentions used a highly sophisticated data mining system to control individuals, social groups, governments, and even the world?" Not only is the technology "spot on," but this fast-paced thriller smacks us in the face with reality. The world is full of evil and smart hackers and even smarter programmers could easily make this nightmare scenario come true. Read it and worry. Just when you thought it was safe to use the internet....You just might go back to playing Pong. |
