We've all had nightmares. But what if you started to believe your scary dreams were somehow related to a series of grisly murders? Ethno botanist Gareth McKenna faces just such a dilemma. In Of Blood and Blackwater, he struggles to piece together nightmares he can't quite remember. Dreams that leave him thinking of the years he spent living with an indigenous Amazon tribe. When a curare-laced dart recovered at one of the crime scenes matches the analytical fingerprint from a sample he collected years earlier in the Amazon, Gareth finds himself the lone suspect. His life begins to crumble as his name surfaces in the press. With nowhere else to turn, Gareth must do the unthinkable; he must look beyond science and trust in the strange dreams that offer the only clues to the killer's identity. He travels back to the Amazon, and deep in the rainforest, makes a chilling discovery. One that sends him racing home, desperate to stop a brutal murderer intent on destroying his family.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful A fast-paced, gripping read, By This review is from: Of Blood and Blackwater (Paperback) The author has created a genuine suspense thriller. I found myself reading a little more every night than the clock said I should and falling to sleep wondering just how and when the serial killer would be stopped! The author used beautiful imagery to bring America's Northwest (Portland, OR) and the Amazon to life; but the creepy, all too real serial killer weighs heavily on these beautiful areas. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the pace and writing of a classic mystery novel. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful Dreams + Botany = Death, This review is from: Of Blood and Blackwater (Paperback) Ethnobotanist Gareth McKenna is troubled by terrifying nightmares. Cates (Indianapolis, IN) - See all my reviews This review is from: Of Blood and Blackwater (Paperback) My truest evaluation of works of either literary or cinematic art comes not during the reading or viewing, but afterward-- often days or weeks afterward: Do the characters resonate? Do the images stick with me?This debut novel succeeds on these levels and more. The main characters, here, are well conceived, and I found it easy to either sympathize with or revile them, whichever was appropriate. The author does well supplying insight into each character's motivations, and this strengthens the reader's judgment of his subjects. Cinematic images are created and solidly established by the detailed treatment the author gives each element of scene, setting and character. The descriptions lend deep credibility to the work; supporting, while not impeding the progress of the story. The novel is a quick read, but it lingers insidiously...like many of the best. |
